Greed and fear are two main enemies of investors, as saying goes. This idiom also applies to inter-racial relationship. Crash, the best picture winner of 78th Oscar, unveils these two sources of the suspended problem.
Comparing between two, the effect of fear is more obvious. Anthony and Peter feared the power of the White, Jean feared the black severely after being kidnapped, Christine feared being molested, Ryan feared his father's poor health, Farhad feared the treat to his store and Rick is a master of politics, who played between the fear of the black and that of the white.
Some suggests racism is due to ignorance or misunderstanding of other races. Yet the movie likely rejected this excuse. Jean is the wife of a District Attorney, Ryan and Hanson are detectives, Cameron is a director. They are well educated but tend to racism in various levels. Some fear is due to ignorance, but fear mostly comes from emotional status rather than intelligent one. People usually fear losing what they used to owning. When fear turns to anger, violence appears. That is why Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vadar.
Greed is not obvious, especially when it is rationalized. Farhad is greedy about attacking power, Cameron is greedy about directorship, Graham is greedy about his career and his brother, Jean is greedy about her superiority, Anthony is greedy about material and dignity, Hanson is greedy about being a good man.
Greed is known as a honey trap. The victim will be led to the deep trap gradually without awareness. When you target the goal of your desire, you will overcome any challenge along the way. If your way is slight out of track, you may not be aware of the problem and speed up your pace until you cannot escape from the trap.
Interpersonal relationship is the ultimate problem of human being. It has been studied when civilization began. The problem has not been relieved yet. We feel lonely if we are too far and we crash if we are too close.
Racism, a kind of conflict amongst men, is always under spotlight because apparent difference of various races. No painkiller is available for the society because of human behavior. Nonetheless for myself, I would like to take this quote:
Be as tolerant as the giant ocean containing water from hundreds rivers; be as undesirous as the pure cliff standing over thousands meters.
